           Hethoughtshewasdying,andtookherinhisarmsagaintocarryhertotheprincess’shouse,wherehethoughtthegood-naturedcookmightbeabletodosomethingforher.Whenheliftedher,thetearsflowedyetfaster,andshegavesuchasadmoanthatitwenttohisveryheart.

           “Mother,mother!”hesaid.“Poormother!”andkissedheronthewitheredlips.

           Shestarted;andwhateyestheywerethatopeneduponhim!Buthedidnotseethem,foritwasstillverydark,andhehadenoughtodotomakehiswaythroughthetreestowardsthehouse.

           Justasheapproachedthedoor,feelingmoretiredthanhecouldhaveimaginedpossible—shewassuchalittlethinoldthing—shebegantomove,andbecamesorestlessthat,unabletocarryheramomentlonger,hethoughttolayheronthegrass.Butshestooduprightonherfeet.Herhoodhaddropped,andherhairfellabouther.Thefirstgleamofthemorningwascaughtonherface:thatfacewasbrightasthenever-agingDawn,andhereyeswerelovelyastheskyofdarkestblue.Theprincerecoiledinovermasteringwonder.ItwasDaylightherselfwhomhehadbroughtfromtheforest!Hefellatherfeet,nordaredtolookupuntilshelaidherhanduponhishead.Herosethen.

           “YoukissedmewhenIwasanoldwoman:there!IkissyouwhenIamayoungprincess,”murmuredDaylight.—“Isthatthesuncoming?”
