           Wheresheshallfindoneredwormmore.

           Motherlyforesight,affection,any

           Nameyoumaycallitthatwillnothurtyou,

           Soitwaslateereshetuckedherheadin,

           Andshesleptsolateitwasalmostasin.

           Butthelittlefellowwhoknewoffive

           Nortroubledhisheadaboutanymore,

           Wokeveryearly,feltquitealive,

           Andwantedasixthtoaddtohisstore:

           Hepushedhismother,thegreedyelf,

           Thenthoughthehadbettertryforhimself.

           Whenhismotherawokeandhadrubbedhereyes,

           Feelinglesslikeabird,andmorelikeamole,

           Shesawhim—fancywithwhatsurprise—

           Draggingahugewormoutofahole!

           ’Twasofthissameherotheproverbtookform:

           ’Tistheearlybirdthatcatchestheworm.

           “There,mother!”saidDiamond,ashefinished;“ain’titfunny?”

           “Iwishyouwerelikethatlittlebird,Diamond,andcouldcatchwormsforyourself,”saidhismother,assherosetogoandlookafterherhusband.

           Diamondlayawakeforafewminutes,thinkingwhathecoulddotocatchworms.Itwasverylittletroubletomakeuphismind,however,andstilllesstogotosleepafterit.
