           “Givemealeg,”saidDiamond,andinamomenthewasontheoldhorse’sbackwiththecombandbrush.Hesatonhiswithers,andreachingforwardasheatehishay,hecurriedandhebrushed,firstatonesideofhisneck,andthenattheother.Whenthatwasdoneheaskedforadressing-comb,andcombedhismanethoroughly.Thenhepushedhimselfontohisback,anddidhisshouldersasfardownashecouldreach.Thenhesatonhiscroup,anddidhisbackandsides;thenheturnedaroundlikeamonkey,andattackedhishind-quarters,andcombedhistail.Thislastwasnotsoeasytomanage,forhehadtoliftitup,andeverynowandthenoldDiamondwouldwhiskitoutofhishands,andoncehesentthecombflyingoutofthestabledoor,tothegreatamusementofthemen.ButJackfetcheditagain,andDiamondbeganoncemore,anddidnotleaveoffuntilhehaddonethewholebusinessfairlywell,ifnotinafirst-rate,experiencedfashion.Allthetimetheoldhorsewentoneatinghishay,and,butwithanoccasionalwhiskofhistailwhenDiamondtickledorscratchedhim,tooknonoticeoftheproceeding.Butthatwasallapretence,forheknewverywellwhoitwasthatwasperchedonhisback,andrubbingawayathimwiththecombandthebrush.Sohewasquitepleasedandproud,andperhapssaidtohimselfsomethinglikethis—

           “I’mastupidoldhorse,whocan’tbrushhisowncoat;butthere’smyyounggodsononmyback,cleaningmelikeanangel.
