           Wheredidherdignitycomefrom?ByalatentveinfromAlcinous’line,herfatherhailingfromPhaeacia’sisle?—orfromFitzalanandDeVere,hermaternalgrandfatherhavinghadacousininthepeerage?PerhapsitwasthegiftofHeaven—ahappyconvergenceofnaturallaws.Amongotherthingsopportunityhadoflateyearsbeendeniedheroflearningtobeundignified,forshelivedlonely.Isolationonaheathrendersvulgaritywell-nighimpossible.Itwouldhavebeenaseasyfortheheath-ponies,bats,andsnakestobevulgarasforher.AnarrowlifeinBudmouthmighthavecompletelydemeanedher.
