I. “My Mind to Me a Kingdom Is”

           

           TheJulysunshoneoverEgdonandfireditscrimsonheathertoscarlet.Itwastheoneseasonoftheyear,andtheoneweatheroftheseason,inwhichtheheathwasgorgeous.Thisfloweringperiodrepresentedthesecondornoontidedivisioninthecycleofthosesuperficialchangeswhichalonewerepossiblehere;itfollowedthegreenoryoung-fernperiod,representingthemorn,andprecededthebrownperiod,whentheheathbellsandfernswouldweartherussettingesofevening;tobeinturndisplacedbythedarkhueofthewinterperiod,representingnight.

           ClymandEustacia,intheirlittlehouseatAlderworth,beyondEastEgdon,werelivingonwithamonotonywhichwasdelightfultothem.Theheathandchangesofweatherwerequiteblottedoutfromtheireyesforthepresent.Theywereenclosedinasortofluminousmist,whichhidfromthemsurroundingsofanyinharmoniouscolour,andgavetoallthingsthecharacteroflight.Whenitrainedtheywerecharmed,becausetheycouldremainindoorstogetheralldaywithsuchashowofreason;whenitwasfinetheywerecharmed,becausetheycouldsittogetheronthehills.Theywerelikethosedoublestarswhichrevolveroundandroundeachother,andfromadistanceappeartobeone.Theabsolutesolitudeinwhichtheylivedintensifiedtheirreciprocalthoughts;yetsomemighthavesaidthatithadthedisadvantageofconsumingtheirmutualaffectionsatafearfullyprodigalrate.
