           Yeobright,havingfilledtheofficeattheweddingservicewhichnaturallyfelltohishands,andafterwardsreturnedtothehousewiththehusbandandwife,wasindisposedtotakepartinthefeastinganddancingthatwounduptheevening.Thomasinwasdisappointed.

           “IwishIcouldbetherewithoutdashingyourspirits,”hesaid.“ButImightbetoomuchliketheskullatthebanquet.”

           “No,no.”

           “Well,dear,apartfromthat,ifyouwouldexcuseme,Ishouldbeglad.Iknowitseemsunkind;but,dearThomasin,IfearIshouldnotbehappyinthecompany—there,that’sthetruthofit.Ishallalwaysbecomingtoseeyouatyournewhome,youknow,sothatmyabsencenowwillnotmatter.”

           “ThenIgivein.Dowhateverwillbemostcomfortabletoyourself.”

           Clymretiredtohislodgingatthehousetopmuchrelieved,andoccupiedhimselfduringtheafternooninnotingdowntheheadsofasermon,withwhichheintendedtoinitiateallthatreallyseemedpracticableoftheschemethathadoriginallybroughthimhither,andthathehadsolongkeptinviewundervariousmodifications,andthroughevilandgoodreport.Hehadtestedandweighedhisconvictionsagainandagain,andsawnoreasontoalterthem,thoughhehadconsiderablylessenedhisplan.Hiseyesight,bylonghumouringinhisnativeair,hadgrownstronger,butnotsufficientlystrongtowarranthisattemptinghisextensiveeducationalproject.Yethedidnotrepine—therewasstillmorethanenoughofanunambitioussorttotaxallhisenergiesandoccupyallhishours.
