           Intwohoursshereachedaslopeaboutthree-fourthsthewholedistancefromAlderworthtoherownhome,wherealittlepatchofshepherd’s-thymeintrudeduponthepath;andshesatdownupontheperfumedmatitformedthere.Infrontofheracolonyofantshadestablishedathoroughfareacrosstheway,wheretheytoiledanever-endingandheavy-ladenthrong.Tolookdownuponthemwaslikeobservingacitystreetfromthetopofatower.Sherememberedthatthisbustleofantshadbeeninprogressforyearsatthesamespot—doubtlessthoseoftheoldtimesweretheancestorsofthesewhichwalkedtherenow.Sheleantbacktoobtainmorethoroughrest,andthesofteasternportionoftheskywasasgreatarelieftohereyesasthethymewastoherhead.Whileshelookedaheronaroseonthatsideoftheskyandflewonwithhisfacetowardsthesun.Hehadcomedrippingwetfromsomepoolinthevalleys,andasheflewtheedgesandliningofhiswings,histhighsandhisbreastweresocaughtbythebrightsunbeamsthatheappearedasifformedofburnishedsilver.Upinthezenithwherehewasseemedafreeandhappyplace,awayfromallcontactwiththeearthlyballtowhichshewaspinioned;andshewishedthatshecouldariseuncrushedfromitssurfaceandflyasheflewthen.

           But,beingamother,itwasinevitablethatsheshouldsoonceasetoruminateuponherowncondition.Hadthetrackofhernextthoughtbeenmarkedbyastreakintheair,likethepathofameteor,itwouldhaveshownadirectioncontrarytotheheron’s,andhavedescendedtotheeastwardupontheroofofClym’shouse.
