HadWildeveknownhowthoroughlyinearnestVennhadbecomehemighthavebeenstillmorealarmed.ThereddlemanhadbeenalmostexasperatedbythesightofWildeveoutsideClym’shouse,andhewaspreparedtogotoanylengthsshortofabsolutelyshootinghim,toterrifytheyounginnkeeperoutofhisrecalcitrantimpulses.ThedoubtfullegitimacyofsuchroughcoerciondidnotdisturbthemindofVenn.Ittroublesfewsuchmindsinsuchcases,andsometimesthisisnottoberegretted.FromtheimpeachmentofStraffordtoFarmerLynch’sshortwaywiththescampsofVirginiatherehavebeenmanytriumphsofjusticewhicharemockeriesoflaw.
