           Mrs.Yeobrightappeareddisinclinedtoenterfurtherintothequestion.“IfearImustgoon,”shesaid.“Idonotseethatanythingelsecanbedone.”

           Andshewenton.ButthoughthisconversationdidnotdivertThomasin’sauntfromherpurposedinterviewwithWildeve,itmadeaconsiderabledifferenceinhermodeofconductingthatinterview.ShethankedGodfortheweaponwhichthereddlemanhadputintoherhands.

           Wildevewasathomewhenshereachedtheinn.Heshowedhersilentlyintotheparlour,andclosedthedoor.Mrs.Yeobrightbegan—

           “Ihavethoughtitmydutytocalltoday.Anewproposalhasbeenmadetome,whichhasratherastonishedme.ItwillaffectThomasingreatly;andIhavedecidedthatitshouldatleastbementionedtoyou.”

           “Yes?Whatisit?”hesaidcivilly.

           “Itis,ofcourse,inreferencetoherfuture.YoumaynotbeawarethatanothermanhasshownhimselfanxioustomarryThomasin.Now,thoughIhavenotencouragedhimyet,Icannotconscientiouslyrefusehimachanceanylonger.Idon’twishtobeshortwithyou;butImustbefairtohimandtoher.”

           “Whoistheman?”saidWildevewithsurprise.
