Alightingfromthecarriage,anddirectingthedrivertoproceedtothegreathouse,withinstructionsnottomentiontoanyonetheobjectoftheirerranduntiltheymetagain,Northupandthesheriffturnedfromthehighway,andcametowardsusacrossthecottonfield. Weobservedthem,onlookingupatthecarriage—oneseveralrodsinadvanceoftheother. Itwasasingularandunusualthingtoseewhitemenapproachingusinthatmanner,andespeciallyatthatearlyhourinthemorning,andUncleAbramandPatseymadesomeremarks,expressiveoftheirastonishment. "Tharheis,massa,"answeredBob,pointingtome,andtwitchingoffhishat.
Iwonderedtomyselfwhatbusinesshecouldpossiblyhavewithme,andturninground,gazedathimuntilhehadapproachedwithinastep. Duringmylongresidenceonthebayou,Ihadbecomefamiliarwiththefaceofeveryplanterwithinmanymiles; butthismanwasanutterstranger—certainlyIhadneverseenhimbefore.
"YournameisPlatt,isit?"heasked.
