           Aremotespot,farwithinthedepthsoftheswamp,backofHawkins’plantation,wasselectedastherallyingpoint. Lewflittedfromoneplantationtoanother,inthedeadofnight,preachingacrusadetoMexico,and,likePetertheHermit,creatingafurorofexcitementwhereverheappeared. Atlengthalargenumberofrunawayswereassembled; stolenmules,andcorngatheredfromthefields,andbaconfilchedfromsmoke-houses,hadbeenconveyedintothewoods.
