Somefurtherformalitiesweregonethroughwithbeforeitwascompleted,when,payingtheofficertwodollars,Iplacedthepapersinmypocket,andstartedwithmytwofriendstoourhotel. Ithoughtatthetime,Imustconfess,thatthepaperswerescarcelyworththecostofobtainingthem—theapprehensionofdangertomypersonalsafetyneverhavingsuggesteditselftomeintheremotestmanner. Theclerk,towhomweweredirected,Iremember,madeamemoranduminalargebook,which,Ipresume,isintheofficeyet. AreferencetotheentriesduringthelatterpartofMarch,orfirstofApril,1841,Ihavenodoubtwillsatisfytheincredulous,atleastsofarasthisparticulartransactionisconcerned.
Withtheevidenceoffreedominmypossession,thenextdayafterourarrivalinNew-York,wecrossedtheferrytoJerseyCity,andtooktheroadtoPhiladelphia. Hereweremainedonenight,continuingourjourneytowardsBaltimoreearlyinthemorning. Induetime,wearrivedinthelattercity,andstoppedatahotelneartherailroaddepot,eitherkeptbyaMr.Rathbone,orknownastheRathboneHouse.
