Hepointedtotheloosecasesandbundlesthathadbeenlyingontheblanketsinthebottomofthesphere.Iwasastonishedtoseethattheywerefloatingnownearlyafootfromthesphericalwall.ThenIsawfromhisshadowthatCavorwasnolongerleaningagainsttheglass.Ithrustoutmyhandbehindme,andfoundthatItoowassuspendedinspace,clearoftheglass.
Ididnotcryoutnorgesticulate,butfearcameuponme.Itwaslikebeingheldandliftedbysomething—youknownotwhat.Themeretouchofmyhandagainsttheglassmovedmerapidly.Iunderstoodwhathadhappened,butthatdidnotpreventmybeingafraid.Wewerecutofffromallexteriorgravitation,onlytheattractionofobjectswithinourspherehadeffect.Consequentlyeverythingthatwasnotfixedtotheglasswasfalling—slowlybecauseoftheslightnessofourmasses—towardsthecentreofgravityofourlittleworld,whichseemedtobesomewhereaboutthemiddleofthesphere,butrathernearertomyselfthanCavor,onaccountofmygreaterweight.
“Wemustturnround,”saidCavor,“andfloatbacktoback,withthethingsbetweenus.”
