           “Andbelowthere,iswherewesawthelights.”

           “Thelights!”saidhe.“Yes—thelightsoftheworldthatnowweshallneversee.”

           “We’llcomeback,”Isaid,fornowwehadescapedsomuchIwasrashlysanguinethatweshouldrecoverthesphere.

           HisanswerIdidnotcatch.

           “Eh?”Iasked.

           “Itdoesn’tmatter,”heanswered,andwehurriedoninsilence.

           Isupposethatslantinglateralwaywasfourorfivemileslong,allowingforitscurvature,anditascendedataslopethatwouldhavemadeitalmostimpossiblysteeponearth,butwhichonestrodeupeasilyunderlunarconditions.WesawonlytwoSelenitesduringallthatportionofourflight,anddirectlytheybecameawareofustheyranheadlong.Itwasclearthattheknowledgeofourstrengthandviolencehadreachedthem.Ourwaytotheexteriorwasunexpectedlyplain.Thespiralgallerystraightenedintoasteeplyascendenttunnel,itsfloorbearingabundanttracesofthemooncalves,andsostraightandshortinproportiontoitsvastarch,thatnopartofitwasabsolutelydark.Almostimmediatelyitbegantolighten,andthenfaroffandhighup,andquiteblindinglybrilliant,appeareditsopeningontheexterior,aslopeofAlpinesteepnesssurmountedbyacrestofbayonetshrub,tallandbrokendownnow,anddryanddead,inspikysilhouetteagainstthesun.

           Anditisstrangethatwemen,towhomthisveryvegetationhadseemedsoweirdandhorriblealittletimeago,shouldnowbeholditwiththeemotionahome-comingexilemightfeelatsightofhisnativeland.
