Very Ridiculous

           Atanothertimeitoccurredtohim,‘Orafellowofaboutthirteenorfourteenstonemightbehiredbythehour.’Butthesejestsdidnottellmateriallyontheafternoon,orhissuspense;and,soothtosay,theybothlaggedfearfully.

           Itwasimpossible,evenbeforedinner,toavoidoftenwalkingaboutinthepatternofthecarpet,lookingoutofthewindow,listeningatthedoorforfootsteps,andoccasionallybecomingratherhotwhenanystepsapproachedthatroom.But,afterdinner,whenthedayturnedtotwilight,andthetwilightturnedtonight,andstillnocommunicationwasmadetohim,itbegantobeasheexpressedit,‘liketheHolyOfficeandslowtorture.’However,stilltruetohisconvictionthatindifferencewasthegenuinehigh-breeding(theonlyconvictionhehad),heseizedthiscrisisastheopportunityfororderingcandlesandanewspaper.

           Hehadbeentryinginvain,forhalfanhour,toreadthisnewspaper,whenthewaiterappearedandsaid,atoncemysteriouslyandapologetically:

           ‘Begyourpardon,sir.You’rewanted,sir,ifyouplease.’

           AgeneralrecollectionthatthiswasthekindofthingthePolicesaidtotheswellmob,causedMr.Harthousetoaskthewaiterinreturn,withbristlingindignation,whattheDevilhemeantby‘wanted’?

           ‘Begyourpardon,sir.Youngladyoutside,sir,wishestoseeyou.’

           ‘Outside?Where?’

           ‘Outsidethisdoor,sir.’

           Givingthewaitertothepersonagebeforementioned,asablock-headdulyqualifiedforthatconsignment,Mr.Harthousehurriedintothegallery.
