Itwasatownofredbrick,orofbrickthatwouldhavebeenredifthesmokeandasheshadallowedit;butasmattersstood,itwasatownofunnaturalredandblacklikethepaintedfaceofasavage.Itwasatownofmachineryandtallchimneys,outofwhichinterminableserpentsofsmoketrailedthemselvesforeverandever,andnevergotuncoiled.Ithadablackcanalinit,andariverthatranpurplewithill-smellingdye,andvastpilesofbuildingfullofwindowswheretherewasarattlingandatremblingalldaylong,andwherethepistonofthesteam-engineworkedmonotonouslyupanddown,liketheheadofanelephantinastateofmelancholymadness.Itcontainedseverallargestreetsallverylikeoneanother,andmanysmallstreetsstillmorelikeoneanother,inhabitedbypeopleequallylikeoneanother,whoallwentinandoutatthesamehours,withthesamesounduponthesamepavements,todothesamework,andtowhomeverydaywasthesameasyesterdayandto-morrow,andeveryyearthecounterpartofthelastandthenext.
TheseattributesofCoketownwereinthemaininseparablefromtheworkbywhichitwassustained;againstthemweretobesetoff,comfortsoflifewhichfoundtheirwayallovertheworld,andeleganciesoflifewhichmade,wewillnotaskhowmuchofthefinelady,whocouldscarcelybeartoheartheplacementioned.
