Hehadbeenleft,bythedeathoftheirparentsinIndia,guardiantoasmallnephewandasmallniece,childrenofayounger,amilitarybrother,whomhehadlosttwoyearsbefore.Thesechildrenwere,bythestrangestofchancesforamaninhisposition—alonemanwithouttherightsortofexperienceoragrainofpatience—veryheavilyonhishands.
