Herevivedafteranextraordinarilyshorttime,andscrambleduptohisfeetwildly.Nostromo,inanangryandthreateningvoice,orderedhimforward.Hirschwasoneofthosemenwhomfearlasheslikeawhip,andhemusthavehadanappallingideaoftheCapataz’sferocity.Hedisplayedanextraordinaryagilityindisappearingforwardintothedarkness.Theyheardhimgettingoverthetarpaulin;thentherewasthesoundofaheavyfall,followedbyawearysigh.Afterwardsallwasstillinthefore-partofthelighter,asthoughhehadkilledhimselfinhisheadlongtumble.Nostromoshoutedinamenacingvoice—
“Liestillthere!Donotmovealimb.IfIhearasmuchasaloudbreathfromyouIshallcomeoverthereandputabulletthroughyourhead.”
Themerepresenceofacoward,howeverpassive,bringsanelementoftreacheryintoadangeroussituation.Nostromo’snervousimpatiencepassedintogloomythoughtfulness.Decoud,inanundertone,asifspeakingtohimself,remarkedthat,afterall,thisbizarreeventmadenogreatdifference.Hecouldnotconceivewhatharmthemancoulddo.Atmosthewouldbeintheway,likeaninanimateanduselessobject—likeablockofwood,forinstance.
“Iwouldthinktwicebeforegettingridofapieceofwood,”saidNostromo,calmly.“Somethingmayhappenunexpectedlywhereyoucouldmakeuseofit.Butinanaffairlikeoursamanlikethisoughttobethrownoverboard.Evenifhewereasbraveasalionwewouldnotwanthimhere.
