...bythinkingofthespeedwithwhichthingschange—eachpartofeverything;thenarrowspacebetweenourbirthanddeath;theinfinitetimebefore;theequallyunboundedtimethatfollows.
33.Allthatyouseewillsoonhavevanished,andthosewhoseeitvanishwillvanishthemselves,andtheoneswhoreachedoldagehavenoadvantageovertheuntimelydead.
34.Whattheirmindsarelike.Whattheyworkat.Whatevokestheirloveandadmiration.
Imaginetheirsoulsstrippedbare.Andtheirvanity.Tosupposethattheirdisdaincouldharmanyone—ortheirpraisehelpthem.
35.Todecomposeistoberecomposed.
That’swhatnaturedoes.Nature—throughwhomallthingshappenastheyshould,andhavehappenedforeverinjustthesameway,andwillcontinueto,onewayoranother,endlessly.
Thatthingshappenfortheworstandalwayswill,thatthegodshavenopowertoregulatethem,andtheworldiscondemnedtonever-endingevil—howcanyousaythat?
36.Disgustatwhatthingsaremadeof:Liquid,dust,bones,filth.Ormarbleashardeneddirt,goldandsilverasresidues,clothesashair,purpledyeasshellfishblood.Andalltherest.
