Thepeopleoftheworlddecidedtheywouldnotfeedthisspace-bat-angel-dragonorwhateveritwas–theywouldfightit. Theywoulddeclarewaronit,andallgettogethertoblastitoffthefaceoftheearth. Andsoitwasthatallthepeoplesofearthdeclaredwaronthemonster, andsentouttheirarmedforcesinagrandcombinedoperation.
Whataterrificattack!
Rockets,projectilesofallsorts,missilesandbombs,shellsandflame-throwers–everythingwastried. ThesmokeoftheexplosionsdriftedoutoverthePacificlikeablack,crawlingcontinent. Thenoiseofthebattleshooktheworldalmostasmuchasthelandingofthedragonhaddone,andformuchlonger.
Thenthenoisedieddownandthesmokecleared. Andthepeoplesoftheworldcriedindismay. Thedragonwasactuallysmiling. Smiling!Aircraftflyingdaringlynearphotographedthevastfacesmiling,andthepicturewasinallthepapers.
Itwassmilingasifithadbeenwelltickled.
Nowthepeoplesoftheworldwereworried. Theywereallgreatfighters. Allspenttheirsparemoneyonpreparingforwars,alwaysmakingbiggerandbetterweapons, andnowtheyhadalltriedtheirutmosttoblastthisthingofftheearth,andwhatwastheresult?
Thedragonmerelysmiled,andnotascratchcouldbeseenanywhereonitsbody.
Humanweaponshadnoeffectonit.
Butthatwasn’tsurprising. Thiscreaturehadcomefromthedepthsofspace,outoftheheartofastar. Nobodyknewwhatitwasmadeof. Perhapsitcouldnotbedestroyedbyanymeanswhatsoever.
