WhenthefarmerssawtheIronManwallowingintheirdeeppit,theysentupagreatcheer. Heglareduptowardsthem,hiseyesburnedfromredtopurple,frompurpletowhite,fromwhitetofierywhirlingblackandred, andthecogsinsidehimgroundandscreeched,buthecouldnotclimboutofthesteep-sidedpit.
Thenunderthelightsofcarheadlamps,thefarmersbroughtbulldozersandearth-pushers, andtheybegantopushinontopofthestrugglingIronManalltheearththeyhaddugwhentheyfirstmadethepitandthathadbeenpiledofftooneside.
TheIronManroaredagainastheearthbegantofallonhim. Butsoonheroarednomore. Soonthepitwasfullofearth.SoontheIronManwasburiedsilent,packeddownunderallthesoil, whilethefarmerspiledtheearthoverhiminamoundandinahill. Theywenttoandfrooverthemoundontheirnewtractors, whichthey’dboughtsincetheIronManatetheiroldones, andtheypackedtheearthdownhard. Thentheyallwenthometalkingcheerfully. TheyweresuretheyhadseenthelastoftheIronMan.
OnlyHogarthfeltsuddenlysorry.Hefeltguilty. Itwashe,afterall,whohadluredtheIronManintothepit.
