           InthePSAatleasttenAbwehrpersonswereatwork,butsomeofthemandpossiblyallwereknowntothelocalSDanditscompetentseniorregionalchief,BrunoKreuzvomMeere.YearsagohehadmetBrunobrieflyataParteigathering.ThemanhadhadacertaininfamousprestigeinPolicecircles,inasmuchasithadbeenhe,in1943,whohaduncoveredtheBritish-CzechplotonReinhardHeydrich’slife,andthereforewhomightbesaidtohavesavedtheHangmanfromassassination.Inanycase,BrunoKreuzvomMeerewasalreadythenascendinginauthoritywithintheSD.Hewasnotamerepolicebureaucrat.

           Hewas,infact,aratherdangerousman.

           Therewasevenapossibilitythatevenwithalltheprecautionstaken,bothonthepartoftheAbwehrinBerlinandtheTokkokainTokyo,theSDhadlearnedofthisattemptedmeetinginSanFranciscointheofficesoftheRankingTradeMission.However,thiswasafterallJapanese-administeredland.TheSDhadnoofficialauthoritytointerfere.ItcouldseetoitthattheGermanprincipalhimselfinthiscasewasarrestedassoonashesetfootagainonReichterritory;butitcouldhardlytakeactionagainsttheJapaneseprincipal,oragainsttheexistenceofthemeetingitself.
