Itwasgoldthatwouldmakethemarealprofit.Theyhadalreadybegunsearchingintosourcesofscrapgold,melted-downantiquepiecesofnoartisticvalue—muchcheapertobuythannewgold.Butevenso,anenormousexpensewasinvolved.
