`Galadriel!’hecalled,andgatheringhiscourageheliftedupthePhialoncemore.Theeyeshalted.Foramomenttheirregardrelaxed,asifsomehintofdoubttroubledthem.ThenFrodo’sheartflamedwithinhim,andwithoutthinkingwhathedid,whetheritwasfollyordespairorcourage,hetookthePhialinhislefthand,andwithhisrighthanddrewhissword.Stingflashedout,andthesharpelven-bladesparkledinthesilverlight,butatitsedgesabluefireflicked.Thenholdingthestaraloftandthebrightswordadvanced,Frodo,hobbitoftheShire,walkedsteadilydowntomeettheeyes.
Theywavered.Doubtcameintothemasthelightapproached.Onebyonetheydimmed,andslowlytheydrewback.Nobrightnesssodeadlyhadeverafflictedthembefore.Fromsunandmoonandstartheyhadbeensafeunderground,butnowastarhaddescendedintotheveryearth.Stillitapproached,andtheeyesbegantoquail.Onebyonetheyallwentdark;theyturnedaway,andagreatbulk,beyondthelight’sreach,heaveditshugeshadowinbetween.Theyweregone.
