Theydidnotanswer,buttheyfollowedhimontotheclimbingledge.Itwaslittletothelikingofeitherofthem,notevenafterfacingsomanyotherperils;butitdidnotlastlong.Soonthepathreachedaroundedanglewherethemountain-sideswelledoutagain,andthereitsuddenlyenteredanarrowopeningintherock.TheyhadcometothefirststairthatGollumhadspokenof.Thedarknesswasalmostcomplete,andtheycouldseenothingmuchbeyondtheirhands’stretch;butGollum’seyesshonepale,severalfeetabove,asheturnedbacktowardsthem.

Carewascertainlyneeded.FrodoandSamatfirstfelteasier,havingnowawalloneitherside,butthestairwaywasalmostassteepasaladder,andastheyclimbedupandup,theybecamemoreandmoreawareofthelongblackfallbehindthem.Andthestepswerenarrow,spacedunevenly,andoftentreacherous:theywerewornandsmoothattheedges,andsomewerebroken,andsomecrackedasfootwassetuponthem.
