Foraboutanhourtheywenton,silently,insinglefile,oppressedbythegloomandbytheabsolutestillnessoftheland,brokenonlynowandagainbythefaintrumblingasofthunderfarawayordrum-beatsinsomehollowofthehills.Downfromtheirhiding-placetheywent,andthenturningsouththeysteeredasstraightacourseasGollumcouldfindacrossalongbrokenslopethatleaneduptowardsthemountains.Presently,notfarahead,loominguplikeablackwall,theysawabeltoftrees.’
