Toowearytogofurthertheysoughtforsomeplacewheretheycouldrest.Forawhiletheysatwithoutspeakingundertheshadowofamoundofslag;butfoulfumesleakedoutofit,catchingtheirthroatsandchokingthem.Gollumwasthefirsttogetup.Splutteringandcursingherose,andwithoutawordoraglanceatthehobbitshecrawledawayonallfours.FrodoandSamcrawledafterhim,untiltheycametoawidealmostcircularpit,high-bankeduponthewest.Itwascoldanddead,andafoulsumpofoilymany-colouredoozelayatitsbottom.Inthisevilholetheycowered,hopinginitsshadowtoescapetheattentionoftheEye.
Thedaypassedslowly.Agreatthirsttroubledthem,buttheydrankonlyafewdropsfromtheirbottles-lastfilledinthegully,whichnowastheylookedbackinthoughtseemedtothemaplaceofpeaceandbeauty.Thehobbitstookitinturntowatch.Atfirst,tiredastheywere,neitherofthemcouldsleepatall;butasthesunfarawaywasclimbingdownintoslowmovingcloud,Samdozed.ItwasFrodo’sturntobeonguard.Helaybackontheslopeofthepit,butthatdidnoteasethesenseofburdenthatwasonhim.
