Whilethegreylightlasted,theycoweredunderablackstonelikeworms,shrinking,lestthewingedterrorshouldpassandspythemwithitscrueleyes.Theremainderofthatjourneywasashadowofgrowingfearinwhichmemorycouldfindnothingtorestupon.Fortwomorenightstheystruggledonthroughthewearypathlessland.Theair,asitseemedtothem,grewharsh,andfilledwithabitterreekthatcaughttheirbreathandparchedtheirmouths.
