Theywalkedslowly,stooping,keepingcloseinline,followingattentivelyeverymovethatGollummade.Thefensgrewmorewet,openingintowidestagnantmeres,amongwhichitgrewmoreandmoredifficulttofindthefirmerplaceswherefeetcouldtreadwithoutsinkingintogurglingmud.Thetravellerswerelight,ormaybenoneofthemwouldeverhavefoundawaythrough.
