           Underthefirstshadowsofnighttheystartedoutonthenextstageoftheirjourney.AfterawhileSamturnedandlookedbackatthewaytheyhadcome.Themouthofthegullywasablacknotchinthedimcliff.`I’mgladwe’vegottherope,’hesaid.’We’vesetalittlepuzzleforthatfootpad,anyhow.Hecantryhisnastyflappyfeetonthoseledges!’

           Theypickedtheirstepsawayfromtheskirtsofthecliff,amongawildernessofbouldersandroughstones,wetandslipperywiththeheavyrain.Thegroundstillfellawaysharply.Theyhadnotgoneveryfarwhentheycameuponagreatfissurethatyawnedsuddenlyblackbeforetheirfeet.Itwasnotwide,butitwastoowidetojumpacrossinthedimlight.Theythoughttheycouldhearwatergurglinginitsdepths.Itcurvedawayontheirleftnorthward,backtowardsthehills.
