’WhenSarumanwassafebackinOrthanc,itwasnotlongbeforehesetsomeofhispreciousmachinerytowork.BythattimethereweremanyEntsinsideIsengard:somehadfollowedQuickbeam,andothershadburstinfromthenorthandeast;theywereroamingaboutanddoingagreatdealofdamage.Suddenlyupcamefiresandfoulfumes:theventsandshaftsallovertheplainbegantospoutandbelch.SeveraloftheEntsgotscorchedandblistered.Oneofthem,BeechboneIthinkhewascalled,averytallhandsomeEnt,gotcaughtinasprayofsomeliquidfireandburnedlikeatorch:ahorriblesight.
’Thatsentthemmad.Ithoughtthattheyhadbeenreallyrousedbefore;butIwaswrong.Isawwhatitwaslikeatlast.Itwasstaggering.Theyroaredandboomedandtrumpeted,untilstonesbegantocrackandfallatthemerenoiseofthem.MerryandIlayonthegroundandstuffedourcloaksintoourears.RoundandroundtherockofOrthanctheEntswentstridingandstorminglikeahowlinggale,breakingpillars,hurlingavalanchesofbouldersdowntheshafts,tossinguphugeslabsofstoneintotheairlikeleaves.Thetowerwasinthemiddleofaspinningwhirlwind.Isawironpostsandblocksofmasonrygorocketinguphundredsoffeet,andsmashagainstthewindowsofOrthanc.ButTreebeardkepthishead.Hehadnothadanyburns,luckily.Hedidnotwanthisfolktohurtthemselvesintheirfury,andhedidnotwantSarumantoescapeoutofsomeholeintheconfusion.ManyoftheEntswerehurlingthemselvesagainsttheOrthanc-rock;butthatdefeatedthem.
