           Manyhousestherewere,chambers,halls,andpassages,cutandtunnelledbackintothewallsupontheirinnerside,sothatalltheopencirclewasoverlookedbycountlesswindowsanddarkdoors.Thousandscoulddwellthere,workers,servants,slaves,andwarriorswithgreatstoreofarms;wolveswerefedandstabledindeepdensbeneath.Theplain,too,wasboredanddelved.Shaftsweredrivendeepintotheground;theirupperendswerecoveredbylowmoundsanddomesofstone,sothatinthemoonlighttheRingofIsengardlookedlikeagraveyardofunquietdead.Forthegroundtrembled.Theshaftsrandownbymanyslopesandspiralstairstocavernsfarunder;thereSarumanhadtreasuries,store-houses,armouries,smithies,andgreatfurnaces.Ironwheelsrevolvedthereendlessly,andhammersthudded.Atnightplumesofvapoursteamedfromthevents,litfrombeneathwithredlight,orblue,orvenomousgreen.

           Tothecentrealltheroadsranbetweentheirchains.Therestoodatowerofmarvellousshape.Itwasfashionedbythebuildersofold,whosmoothedtheRingofIsengard,andyetitseemedathingnotmadebythecraftofMen,butrivenfromthebonesoftheearthintheancienttormentofthehills.Apeakandisleofrockitwas.blackandgleaminghard:fourmightypiersofmany-sidedstonewereweldedintoone,butnearthesummittheyopenedintogapinghorns.
