Withthatthecompanysaidfarewelltotheislandandthemound,andpassedovertheriver,andclimbedthefurtherbank.Thentheyrodeon,gladtohaveleftthemournfulFords.Astheywentthehowlingofthewolvesbrokeoutanew.
TherewasanancienthighwaythatrandownfromIsengardtothecrossings.Forsomewayittookitscoursebesidetheriver,bendingwithiteastandthennorth;butatthelastitturnedawayandwentstraighttowardsthegatesofIsengard;andthesewereunderthemountain-sideinthewestofthevalley,sixteenmilesormorefromitsmouth.Thisroadtheyfollowedbuttheydidnotrideuponit;forthegroundbesideitwasfirmandlevel,coveredformanymilesaboutwithshortspringingturf.Theyrodenowmoreswiftly,andbymidnighttheFordswerenearlyfiveleaguesbehind.Thentheyhalted,endingtheirnight’sjourney,fortheKingwasweary.TheywerecometothefeetoftheMistyMountains,andthelongarmsofNanCurunírstretcheddowntomeetthem.
