TheRiderscametothewood,andtheyhalted;horseandman,theywereunwillingtopassin.Thetreesweregreyandmenacing,andashadoworamistwasaboutthem.Theendsoftheirlongsweepingboughshungdownlikesearchingfingers,theirrootsstoodupfromthegroundlikethelimbsofstrangemonsters,anddarkcavernsopenedbeneaththem.ButGandalfwentforward,leadingthecompany,andwheretheroadfromtheHornburgmetthetreestheysawnowanopeninglikeanarchedgateundermightyboughs;andthroughitGandalfpassed,andtheyfollowedhim.Thentotheiramazementtheyfoundthattheroadranon,andtheDeeping-streambesideit;andtheskywasopenaboveandfullofgoldenlight.Butoneithersidethegreataislesofthewoodwerealreadywrappedindusk,stretchingawayintoimpenetrableshadows;andtheretheyheardthecreakingandgroaningofboughs,andfarcries,andarumourofwordlessvoices,murmuringangrily.NoOrcorotherlivingcreaturecouldbeseen.
LegolasandGimliwerenowridingtogetherupononehorse;andtheykeptclosebesideGandalf,forGimliwasafraidofthewood.
’Itishotinhere,’saidLegolastoGandalf.’Ifeelagreatwrathaboutme.Doyounotfeeltheairthrobinyourears?’
’Yes,’saidGandalf.
