AtfirstMerryandPippinwerestruckchieflybythevarietythattheysaw:themanyshapes,andcolours,thedifferencesingirth;andheight,andlengthoflegandarm;andinthenumberoftoesandfingers(anythingfromthreetonine).AfewseemedmoreorlessrelatedtoTreebeard,andremindedthemofbeech-treesoroaks.Buttherewereotherkinds.Somerecalledthechestnut:brown-skinnedEntswithlargesplayfingeredhands,andshortthicklegs.Somerecalledtheash:tallstraightgreyEntswithmany-fingeredhandsandlonglegs;somethefir(thetallestEnts),andothersthebirch,therowan,andthelinden.ButwhentheEntsallgatheredroundTreebeard,bowingtheirheadsslightly,murmuringintheirslowmusicalvoices,andlookinglongandintentlyatthestrangers,thenthehobbitssawthattheywereallofthesamekindred,andallhadthesameeyes:notallsooldorsodeepasTreebeard’s,butallwiththesameslow,steady,thoughtfulexpression,andthesamegreenflicker.
Assoonasthewholecompanywasassembled,standinginawidecircleroundTreebeard,acuriousandunintelligibleconversationbegan.TheEntsbegantomurmurslowly:firstonejoinedandthenanother,untiltheywereallchantingtogetherinalongrisingandfallingrhythm,nowlouderononesideofthering,nowdyingawaythereandrisingtoagreatboomontheotherside.Thoughhecouldnotcatchorunderstandanyofthewords-hesupposedthelanguagewasEntish-Pippinfoundthesoundverypleasanttolistentoatfirst;butgraduallyhisattentionwavered.
