           ’Whentheworldwasyoung,andthewoodswerewideandwild,theEntsandtheEntwives-andtherewereEntmaidensthen:ah!thelovelinessofFimbrethil,ofWandlimbthelightfooted,inthedaysofouryouth!-theywalkedtogetherandtheyhousedtogether.Butourheartsdidnotgoongrowinginthesameway:theEntsgavetheirlovetothingsthattheymetintheworld,andtheEntwivesgavetheirthoughttootherthings,fortheEntslovedthegreattrees;andthewildwoods,andtheslopesofthehighhills;andtheydrankofthemountain-streams,andateonlysuchfruitasthetreesletfallintheirpath;andtheylearnedoftheElvesandspokewiththeTrees.ButtheEntwivesgavetheirmindstothelessertrees,andtothemeadsinthesunshinebeyondthefeetoftheforests;andtheysawthesloeinthethicket,andthewildappleandthecherryblossominginspring,andthegreenherbsinthewaterlandsinsummer,andtheseedinggrassesintheautumnfields.Theydidnotdesiretospeakwiththesethings;buttheywishedthemtohearandobeywhatwassaidtothem.TheEntwivesorderedthemtogrowaccordingtotheirwishes,andbearleafandfruittotheirliking;fortheEntwivesdesiredorder,andplenty,andpeace(bywhichtheymeantthatthingsshouldremainwheretheyhadsetthem).SotheEntwivesmadegardenstolivein.ButweEntswentonwandering,andweonlycametothegardensnowandagain.ThenwhentheDarknesscameintheNorth,theEntwivescrossedtheGreatRiver,andmadenewgardens,andtillednewfields,andwesawthemmoreseldom.
