Hewasunabletotellwhetherthedemandersdidordidnotrepresenthisworkers,theBoard’srulesonunionelectionshavingmadeitamatterimpossibletodefine.HelearnedonlythatthegroupconsistedofthosenewcomerswhomtheBoardhadslippedintohismillsinthepastfewmonths.
OnOctober23,theUnificationBoardrejectedtheunion’spetition,refusingtogranttheraise.Ifanyhearingshadbeenheldonthematter,Reardenhadnotknownaboutit.Hehadnotbeenconsulted,informedornotified.Hehadwaited,volunteeringnoquestions.
OnOctober25,thenewspapersofthecountry,controlledbythesamemenwhocontrolledtheBoard,beganacampaignofcommiserationwiththeworkersofReardenSteel.Theyprintedstoriesabouttherefusalofthewageraise,omittinganymentionofwhohadrefuseditorwhoheldtheexclusivelegalpowertorefuse,asifcountingonthepublictoforgetlegaltechnicalitiesunderabarrageofstoriesimplyingthatanemployerwasthenaturalcauseofallmiseriessufferedbyemployees.
