Ifmenfallforsomeviciouspieceofinsanity,whentheyhavenowaytomakeitworkandnopossiblereasontoexplaintheirchoice—it’sbecausetheyhaveareasonthattheydonotwishtotell.Andweweren’tsoinnocenteither,whenwevotedforthatplanatthefirstmeeting.Wedidn’tdoitjustbecausewebelievedthatthedrippyoldgufftheyspewedwasgood.Wehadanotherreason,buttheguffhelpedustohideitfromourneighborsandfromourselves.Theguffgaveusachancetopassoffasvirtuesomethingthatwe’dbeashamedtoadmitotherwise.Therewasn’tamanvotingforitwhodidn’tthinkthatunderasetupofthiskindhe’dmuscleinontheprofitsofthemenablerthanhimself.Therewasn’tamanrichandsmartenoughbutthathedidn’tthinkthatsomebodywasricherandsmarter,andthisplanwouldgivehimashareofhisbetter’swealthandbrain.Butwhilehewasthinkingthathe’dgetunearnedbenefitsfromthemenabove,heforgotaboutthemenbelowwho’dgetunearnedbenefits,too.Heforgotaboutallhisinferiorswho’drushtodrainhimjustashehopedtodrainhissuperiors.Theworkerwholikedtheideathathisneedentitledhimtoalimousinelikehisboss’s,forgotthateverybumandbeggaronearthwouldcomehowlingthattheirneedentitledthemtoaniceboxlikehisown.
