           NatTaggart’sstatuewascopiedfromanartist’ssketchofhim,theonlyrecordevermadeofhisappearance.Hehadlivedfarintooldage,butonecouldneverthinkofhimexceptashewasonthatsketch-asayoungman.Inherchildhood,hisstatuehadbeenDagny’sfirstconceptoftheexalted.Whenshewassenttochurchortoschool,andheardpeopleusingthatword,shethoughtthatsheknewwhattheymeant:shethoughtofthestatue.

           Thestatuewasofayoungmanwithatall,gauntbodyandanangularface.Heheldhisheadasifhefacedachallengeandfoundjoyinhiscapacitytomeetit.AllthatDagnywantedoflifewascontainedinthedesiretoholdherheadashedid.

           Tonight,shelookedatthestatuewhenshewalkedacrosstheconcourse.Itwasamoment’srest;itwasasifaburdenshecouldnotnamewerelightenedandasifafaintcurrentofairweretouchingherforehead.

           Inacorneroftheconcourse,bythemainentrance,therewasasmallnewsstand.Theowner,aquiet,courteousoldmanwithanairofbreeding,hadstoodbehindhiscounterfortwentyyears.Hehadownedacigarettefactoryonce,butithadgonebankrupt,andhehadresignedhimselftothelonelyobscurityofhislittlestandinthemidstofaneternalwhirlpoolofstrangers.Hehadnofamilyorfriendsleftalive.
