           ThomaswasabletoeattherestofhismealwithoutanotherwordfromChuck.Andhewasluckythatthekiddidn’tfeelliketalking,becausedespitethecompleteweirdnessofeverythingthathadhappenedwithinThomas’sknownreachofmemory,hefeltcalmagain.Hisstomachfull,hisenergyreplenished,hismindthankfulforafewmomentsofsilence,hedecidedthatfromthenonhe’dquitwhininganddealwiththings.

           Afterhislastbite,Thomassatbackinhischair."So,Chuck,"hesaidashewipedhismouthwithanapkin."WhatdoIhavetodotobecomeaRunner?"

           "Notthatagain."Chucklookedupfromhisplate,wherehe’dbeenpickingatthecrumbs.Heletoutalow,gurglyburpthatmadeThomascringe.

           "AlbysaidI’dstartmytrialssoonwiththedifferentKeepers.So,whendoIgetashotwiththeRunners?"ThomaswaitedpatientlytogetsomesortofactualinformationfromChuck.

           Chuckrolledhiseyesdramatically,leavingnodoubtastohowstupidanideahethoughtthatwouldbe."Theyshouldbebackinafewhours.Whydon’tyouaskthem?"

           Thomasignoredthesarcasm,diggingdeeper."Whatdotheydowhentheygetbackeverynight?What’supwiththeconcretebuilding?"

           "Maps.Theymeetrightwhentheygetback,beforetheyforgetanything."

           Maps?Thomaswasconfused."Butifthey’retryingtomakeamap,don’ttheyhavepapertowriteonwhilethey’reoutthere?"Maps.Thisintriguedhimmorethananythingelsehe’dheardinawhile.
