           Acoupleofhourslater,ThomaswaslyinginasoftsleepingbagnexttoChuckonabedofgrassnearthegardens.Itwasawidelawnthathehadn’tnoticedbefore,andquiteafewofthegroupchoseitastheirbedtimespot.Thomasthoughtthatwasstrange,butapparentlytherewasn’tenoughroominsidetheHomestead.Atleastitwaswarm.Whichmadehimwonderforthemillionthtimewheretheywere.Hismindhadahardtimegraspingnamesofplaces,orrememberingcountriesorrulers,howtheworldwasorganized.AndnoneofthekidsintheGladehadaclue,eitheratleast,theyweren’tsharingiftheydid.

           Helayinsilenceforthelongesttime,lookingatthestarsandlisteningtothesoftmurmursofvariousconversationsdriftingacrosstheGlade.Sleepfeltmilesaway,andhecouldn’tshakethedespairandhopelessnessthatcoursedthroughhisbodyandmindthetemporaryjoyofChuck’strickonGallyhadlongsincefadedaway.It’dbeenoneendlessandstrangeday.
