"Whatareyoudoing?"askedTommy.
"Well,ifIsaythatI’msweepingthechimney,youwon’tbelieveme,you’resoclever,"saidPippi. "Factis,I’mbaking.ButI’llsoonbedone. Youcansitonthewood-boxforawhile."
Pippicouldworkfast,shecould. TommyandAnnikasatandwatchedhowshewentthroughthedough,howshethrewthecookiesontothecookiepans,andswungthepansintotheoven.
"Done!"saidPippiatlastandshuttheovendooronthelastpanswithabang.
"Whatarewegoingtodonow?"askedTommy.
"Idon’tknowwhatyouaregoingtodo,"saidPippi,"butIknowIcan’tliearoundandbelay. IamaThing-Finder,andwhenyou’reaThing-Finderyoudon’thaveaminutetospare."
"Whatdidyousayyouare?"askedAnnika.

"Somebodywhohuntsforthings,naturally. Whatelsecoulditbe?"saidPippiasshesweptalltheflourleftonthefloorintoalittlepile.
"Thewholeworldisfullofthings,andsomebodyhastolookforthem. Andthat’sjustwhataThing-Finderdoes,"shefinished.
"Whatkindofthings?"askedAnnika.
"Oh,allkinds,"saidPippi. "Lumpsofgold,ostrichfeathers,deadrats,candysnapcrackers,littletinyscrews,andthingslikethat."
