Tommy’sandAnnika’smotherhadinvitedafewladiestoacoffeeparty, andasshehaddoneplentyofbaking,shethoughtTommyandAnnikamightinvitePippioveratthesametime. Thechildrenwouldentertaineachotherandgivenotroubletoanyone.
TommyandAnnikawereoverjoyedwhentheirmothertoldthemandimmediatelydashedovertoPippi’stoinviteher. Pippiwasinthegarden,wateringthefewflowersstillinbloomwithanoldrustywateringcan. AsitwasrainingcatsanddogsthatdayTommytoldPippiherwateringseemedhardlynecessary.
"Yes,that’swhatyousay,"saidPippigrudgingly, "butI’velainawakeallnightthinkingwhatfunitwasgoingtobetogetupandwater,andI’mnotgoingtoletalittlerainstandinmyway."
NowAnnikacameforthwiththedelightfulnewsaboutthecoffeeparty.
"Acoffeeparty!Me!"criedPippi,andshewassoexcitedthatshebegantowaterTommyinsteadoftherosebushsheintendedtosprinkle. "Oh,whatwillhappen?Oh,I’msonervous. WhatifIcan’tbehavemyself?"
"Ofcourseyoucan,"saidAnnika.
