           NaturallyMatildawasputinthebottomclass,wheretherewereeighteenothersmallboysandgirlsaboutthesameageasher.TheirteacherwascalledMissHoney,andshecouldnothavebeenmorethantwenty-threeortwenty-four.Shehadalovelypaleovalmadonnafacewithblueeyesandherhairwaslight-brown.Herbodywassoslimandfragileonegotthefeelingthatifshefellovershewouldsmashintoathousandpieces,likeaporcelainfigure.

           MissJenniferHoneywasamildandquietpersonwhoneverraisedhervoiceandwasseldomseentosmile,butthereisnodoubtshepossessedthatraregiftforbeingadoredbyeverysmallchildunderhercare.Sheseemedtounderstandtotallythebewildermentandfearthatsooftenoverwhelmsyoungchildrenwhoforthefirsttimeintheirlivesareherdedintoaclassroomandtoldtoobeyorders.
