‘Remainstandingwhereyouare,’saidthevoice. ‘Facethedoor. Makenomovement.’
Thechinlessmanobeyed. Hislargepouchycheekswerequiveringuncontrollably. Thedoorclangedopen. Astheyoungofficerenteredandsteppedaside,thereemergedfrombehindhimashortstumpyguardwithenormousarmsandshoulders. Hetookhisstandoppositethechinlessman,andthen,atasignalfromtheofficer,letfreeafrightfulblow,withalltheweightofhisbodybehindit,fullinthechinlessman’smouth. Theforceofitseemedalmosttoknockhimclearofthefloor. Hisbodywasflungacrossthecellandfetchedupagainstthebaseofthelavatoryseat. Foramomenthelayasthoughstunned,withdarkbloodoozingfromhismouthandnose. Averyfaintwhimperingorsqueaking,whichseemedunconscious,cameoutofhim. Thenherolledoverandraisedhimselfunsteadilyonhandsandknees. Amidastreamofbloodandsaliva,thetwohalvesofadentalplatefelloutofhismouth.
Theprisonerssatverystill,theirhandscrossedontheirknees. Thechinlessmanclimbedbackintohisplace. Downonesideofhisfacethefleshwasdarkening. Hismouthhadswollenintoashapelesscherry-colouredmasswithablackholeinthemiddleofit.
Fromtimetotimealittleblooddrippedontothebreastofhisoveralls. Hisgreyeyesstillflittedfromfacetoface,moreguiltilythanever,asthoughheweretryingtodiscoverhowmuchtheothersdespisedhimforhishumiliation.
Thedooropened. Withasmallgesturetheofficerindicatedtheskull-facedman.
