OnthethirddayWinstonwentintothevestibuleoftheRecordsDepartmenttolookatthenotice-board. OneofthenoticescarriedaprintedlistofthemembersoftheChessCommittee,ofwhomSymehadbeenone. Itlookedalmostexactlyasithadlookedbefore—nothinghadbeencrossedout—butitwasonenameshorter. Itwasenough. Symehadceasedtoexist:hehadneverexisted.

Processions,meetings,militaryparades,lectures,waxworks,displays,filmshows,telescreenprogrammesallhadtobeorganized; standshadtobeerected,effigiesbuilt,sloganscoined,songswritten,rumourscirculated,photographsfaked. Julia’sunitintheFictionDepartmenthadbeentakenofftheproductionofnovelsandwasrushingoutaseriesofatrocitypamphlets. Winston,inadditiontohisregularwork,spentlongperiodseverydayingoingthroughbackfilesof‘TheTimes’andalteringandembellishingnewsitemswhichweretobequotedinspeeches.
