ThePartyisnotconcernedwithperpetuatingitsbloodbutwithperpetuatingitself. WHOwieldspowerisnotimportant,providedthatthehierarchicalstructureremainsalwaysthesame.
Allthebeliefs,habits,tastes,emotions,mentalattitudesthatcharacterizeourtimearereallydesignedtosustainthemystiqueofthePartyandpreventthetruenatureofpresent-daysocietyfrombeingperceived. Physicalrebellion,oranypreliminarymovetowardsrebellion,isatpresentnotpossible. Fromtheproletariansnothingistobefeared. Lefttothemselves,theywillcontinuefromgenerationtogenerationandfromcenturytocentury,working,breeding,anddying,notonlywithoutanyimpulsetorebel,butwithoutthepowerofgraspingthattheworldcouldbeotherthanitis. Theycouldonlybecomedangerousiftheadvanceofindustrialtechniquemadeitnecessarytoeducatethemmorehighly; but,sincemilitaryandcommercialrivalryarenolongerimportant,thelevelofpopulareducationisactuallydeclining. Whatopinionsthemasseshold,ordonothold,islookedonasamatterofindifference. Theycanbegrantedintellectuallibertybecausetheyhavenointellect. InaPartymember,ontheotherhand,noteventhesmallestdeviationofopiniononthemostunimportantsubjectcanbetolerated.
APartymemberlivesfrombirthtodeathundertheeyeoftheThoughtPolice. Evenwhenheisalonehecanneverbesurethatheisalone. Whereverhemaybe,asleeporawake,workingorresting,inhisbathorinbed,hecanbeinspectedwithoutwarningandwithoutknowingthatheisbeinginspected. Nothingthathedoesisindifferent.
