           Hismotherdrewherarmroundthechildandpresseditsfaceagainstherbreast. Somethinginthegesturetoldhimthathissisterwasdying. Heturnedandfleddownthestairs,withthechocolategrowingstickyinhishand. 

           Heneversawhismotheragain. Afterhehaddevouredthechocolatehefeltsomewhatashamedofhimselfandhungaboutinthestreetsforseveralhours,untilhungerdrovehimhome. Whenhecamebackhismotherhaddisappeared. Thiswasalreadybecomingnormalatthattime. Nothingwasgonefromtheroomexcepthismotherandhissister. Theyhadnottakenanyclothes,notevenhismother’sovercoat. Tothisdayhedidnotknowwithanycertaintythathismotherwasdead. Itwasperfectlypossiblethatshehadmerelybeensenttoaforced-labourcamp. Asforhissister,shemighthavebeenremoved,likeWinstonhimself,tooneofthecoloniesforhomelesschildren(ReclamationCentres,theywerecalled)whichhadgrownupasaresultofthecivilwar, orshemighthavebeensenttothelabourcampalongwithhismother,orsimplyleftsomewhereorothertodie.
