           ThelittletownofVerrièrescanpassforoneoftheprettiestinFranche-Comté.Itswhitehouseswiththeirpointedred-tiledroofsstretchalongtheslopeofahill,whoseslightestundulationsaremarkedbygroupsofvigorouschestnuts.TheDoubsflowstowithinsomehundredfeetaboveitsfortifications,whichwerebuiltlongagobytheSpaniards,andarenowinruins.

           VerrièresisshelteredonthenorthbyahighmountainwhichisoneofthebranchesoftheJura.ThejaggedpeaksoftheVerraarecoveredwithsnowfromthebeginningoftheOctoberfrosts.AtorrentwhichrushesdownfromthemountainstraversesVerrièresbeforethrowingitselfintotheDoubs,andsuppliesthemotivepowerforagreatnumberofsawmills.Theindustryisverysimple,andsecuresacertainprosperitytothemajorityoftheinhabitantswhoaremorepeasantthanbourgeois.Itisnot,however,thewoodsawswhichhaveenrichedthislittletown.Itisthemanufactureofpaintedtiles,calledMulhousetiles,thatisresponsibleforthatgeneralaffluencewhichhascausedthefaçadesofnearlyallthehousesinVerrièrestoberebuiltsincethefallofNapoleon.

           Onehasscarcelyenteredthetown,beforeoneisstunnedbythedinofastridentmachineofterrifyingaspect.Twentyheavyhammerswhichfallwithanoisethatmakesthepavedfloortremble,areliftedupbyawheelsetinmotionbythetorrent.EachofthesehammersmanufactureseverydayIdon’tknowhowmanythousandsofnails.
