OnMarch23rd,themanuscriptcontinued, Wilcoxfailedtoappear; andinquiriesathisquartersrevealedthathehadbeenstrickenwithanobscuresortoffever andtakentothehomeofhisfamilyinWatermanStreet. Hehadcriedoutinthenight,arousingseveralotherartistsinthebuilding, andhadmanifestedsincethenonlyalternationsofunconsciousnessanddelirium. Myuncleatoncetelephonedthefamily,andfromthattimeforwardkeptclosewatchofthecase; callingoftenattheThayerStreetofficeofDr.Tobey, whomhelearnedtobeincharge. Theyouth’sfebrilemind,apparently,wasdwellingonstrangethings; andthedoctorshudderednowandthenashespokeofthem. Theyincludednotonlyarepetitionofwhathehadformerlydreamed, buttouchedwildlyonagiganticthing "mileshigh" whichwalkedorlumberedabout. Heatnotimefullydescribedthisobject, butoccasionalfranticwords,asrepeatedbyDr.Tobey, convincedtheprofessorthatitmustbeidenticalwiththenamelessmonstrosity hehadsoughttodepictinhisdream-sculpture. Referencetothisobject, thedoctoradded,wasinvariablyapreludetotheyoungman’ssubsidenceintolethargy.Histemperature, oddlyenough,wasnotgreatlyabovenormal; buthiswholeconditionwasotherwisesuchastosuggesttruefever ratherthanmentaldisorder.
OnApril2ndatabout3p.m.everytraceofWilcox’smaladysuddenlyceased. Hesatuprightinbed, astonishedtofindhimselfathomeandcompletelyignorantof whathadhappenedindreamorreality sincethenightofMarch22nd. Pronouncedwellbyhisphysician,hereturnedtohisquartersinthreedays; buttoProfessorAngellhewasofnofurtherassistance.
